Twitter and Government

Living and working in the DC area has the benefit of putting you face-first into the government’s antics, whether you want it or not.  I was just reading this week’s Washington Business Journal and found out that the “U.S. Government is all A-Twitter.”  Go figure. Just when you thought the government was lagging behind corporate America, lo and behold “government geeks are joining the Twitter movement in droves”, according to the article.
So from June of 2008 to June of 2009, the percentage of folks using Twitter is up over 1928% in terms of total users worldwide and according to the source they quoted (GovTwit, of course) the number of government Twitterers is up 1300% in the same time frame!
GovTwit itself has over 20 million followers and they just launched July 24th.
The most interesting fact I gleaned from this article, though, is that NASA astronaut Michael Massimino posted the first ever tweet from space orbit, saying that “Launch was awesome!”
